Rohtang Pass Status: OPEN

Update 16 October 2019:

Manali Leh Highway is now Officially Closed. Lahaul-Spiti administration had already removed the check-post from Sarchu on 23 September 2019 and the check-post of Darcha was also removed yesterday. Tourists are advised not to use Manali Leh Highway till Next Season.


There are unconfirmed reports from our sources that Rohtang Tunnel may be thrown open for vehicular traffic on 25th December 2019 by PM Modi. The 8.8 km long tunnel is an engineering marvel. Engineers are engaged in the tunnel work beneath the 13,050 feet high Rohtang Pass to provide all-weather connectivity to the residents of Lahaul-Spiti. It will reduce the distance between Manali and Keylong by 46 km. Stay tuned for future updates.

Update 21 August 2019:

Manali Leh Highway status is OPEN. Road was made clear by BRO on 20 August 2019 late night.


Update 19 August 2019:

Due to continuous heavy rains from last 3 days, most of the roads in Himachal are blocked. Manali Leh Highway status is CLOSED. There is a massive landslide between Marhi & Rohtang Pass. Koksar bridge is also washed away from flash floods. Manali Leh Highway is closed for next couple of days. Manali – Chandigarh NH is also blocked. All are advised to take following route to reach Chandigarh : Manali – Naggar – Kullu – Bajoura – IIT Kamand – Mandi – Bhota – Una – Chandigarh. Thosands of tourists are stuck in Manali, Keylong and Leh. Weather is predicted to remain clear in upcoming week. Situtaion will start to improve from today itself. Stay Safe.


Update 24 June 2019:

Since most of the tourist crowd from Manali town is now returned, and no traffic jam at Rohtang Pass is seen nowadays. Manali Leh Highway is in much better condition as compare to previous years. Heavy snow along side the Highway at high passes makes it even more beautiful this year to drive.

Update 12 June 2019:

Due to heavy snowfall at Baralacha La, many travellers from Manali side were forced to return back to Jispa yesterday. However, the Manali Leh Highway status is OPEN, but the traffic is temporarily stopped for few hours or for a day due to ongoing snowfall.

All are advised to prepare well and keep enough eatables and water in case you plan to proceed on Highway in next couple of days.

Update 10 June 2019:

Manali Leh Highway is now OPEN Officially for tourists from today onwards.

Update 03 June 2019:

Daily thousands of visitors are going to Rohtang Pass from Manali to see the snow. Manali Leh Highway is still closed and millions of eyes are waiting to see the news of its opening. BRO has completed the snow cutting work and they will be opening the entire Manali Leh Highway anytime soon. It is suggested to keep your plans for Manali Leh Highway only after 10th of June 2019. Update 29 May 2019:

Local Administration carried out an inspection of Rohtang Pass on 28 May 2019 and notified the opening of Rohtang Pass. ROHTANG PASS will be OPEN for tourist from 01st June 2019. Manali Leh Highway Status is closed but tourist will be allowed to visit Beyond Rohtang Pass as well from 01st June 2019.


Update 19 May 2019:

GOOD NEWS… Sign of relief for adventure and travel enthusiasts as the first vehicle had crossed Rohtang Pass and reached Keylong today. Vehicle carrying BRO team left from Rohtang Pass Top today early morning for Keylong. The road is now clear till Keylong. As of now, vehicles carrying locals, supplies, and emergency vehicles are only allowed to cross Rohtang Pass. Tourists are only allowed until Marhi Snow Point. BRO may take 1 more week to allow tourist till the Rohtang Pass Top.

Further, BRO team is working ahead of Zing Zing Bar to clear Baralacha La Pass and they will try to make entire Manali Leh Highway operational by the first week of June. 


Update 15 May 2019:

No sign of relief for adventure and travel enthusiasts as Rohtang Pass is yet to open this year. Current Manali Leh Highway Status 2019 is that it is still closed. It was expected that BRO might open Rohtang Pass before the General Elections in the Valley. As per the latest updates, it will take some 5-6 days to open Rohtang Pass for Locals and Emergency vehicles. BRO has allowed Locals to move through valley via Rohtang Tunnel due to General Elections on 19th May 2019 in the valley. On Sunday, around 500 locals crossed through the Tunnel. 

Tourists have to wait for at least another 12-15 days to cross Rohtang Pass this year. Stay Tuned…


Update 24 April 2019:

Vehicles carrying Lahaul Residents reached till Rahni Nala today. As per our local driver Rocky, BRO is working with great speed and only 8 km stretch is left for BRO to reach till Rohtang Pass top. From the Keylong side, BRO has moved ahead of Koksar and they might be able to make both ends meet by Mid of May.

Update 04 April 2019: BRO (Border Roads Organisation) has reached till Chumbak Mod (around 4 KM before Marhi). The weather has been holding good since last week. BRO will be able to clear snow till Marhi in next few days. BRO targets to open Rohtang Pass by 2nd week of May. However, it may not be thrown open for tourists by the end of May.

Update 26 March 2019:

As per our sources, the snow clearance operations on strategic Manali – Leh highway started officially after organizing a pooja at Gulaba for the safety of jawans and machinery. BRO officials will work hard to connect Lahaul Valley by road with Manali before the Lok Sabha Elections, which are scheduled in the state on 19th May 2019.

  • BRO is going to start the snow clearance operations from Gulaba towards Rohtang Pass from Manali side. This year’s prolonged winter season had made it quite challenging for BRO to clear snow from high passes. May the Mountain and Weather Gods have mercy on brave BRO team as weather predictions are only hoped here in the Himalayas.
  • If the weather holds up good, BRO targets to connect Lahaul Valley through Rohtang Pass by the first week of May 2019.
